Instructions for Knitting Stripes

Knitting Stripes is the easiest way to get started on making your toques more colourful and giving you the fun of trying out colour combinations. It is usually a good idea to finish your ribbing in the main colour or A for your toque. Stripes will require you to manage 2 balls of wool at the same time. When you are comfortable with using 2 colours then get adventurous and try 3 colours.

2 Row Stripes, 2 Colours

When you start row 3 on the first stitch, just leave a 3” end of colour B and make your first stitch of the row in colour B. Just leave the wool for colour A attached and behind your work for row 3. Sometimes, as you keep alternating colours your balls of wool will get twisted around each other. When you notice this happening, just take a minute to unravel them.

*Knit row 1 in colour A; purl row 2 in colour A

Knit row 3 in colour B; purl row 4 in colour B**

Repeat these 4 rows until end of work

This hat is using chunky wool.

2 Row Stripes Using 3 Colours (A, B and C) of wool

Repeat from * to ** for 2 row stripes using 2 colours.

Knit row 5 in colour C; purl row 6 in colour C

4 Row Stripes Using 3 Colours

Row 1 K in colour A;  row 2 P in colour A
Row 3 K in colour A;  row 4 P in colour A

Row 5 K in colour B;  row 6 P in colour B
Row 7 K in colour B;  row 8 P in colour B

Row 9 K in colour C; row 10 P in colour C
Row 11 K in colour C; row 12 P in colour C

Instructions for Knitting Borders

Borders are another easy way to add variety to your toques and allow for endless combinations of ways to use them. Start with your main colour A of wool and add a second colour B of wool. A single border can be used or you can combine a border on the bottom, another pattern in the middle, and then the same border at the top to provide symmetry to your design. For example, you can add a fleur-de-lis pattern as your middle pattern. It is usually a good idea to do  2 or 4 rows of work in your main colour before you start your middle pattern and again after you finish the middle pattern. Again, this will help to give symmetry to our designs. See some of the Sample Toques to get some ideas or make up your own. This is where you can let your creativity run wild.
